We now come to the culmination of Paul’s thanksgiving portion of his epistle which is his prayer for them. His thankfulness for them combined with his affection for them has given over to his intercession for them. In this case his prayer for them is one petition with infinite implications. What else is that Paul not only tells the congregation at Philippi what he is praying for them but also why he is praying it and even how he sees the prayer being answered. This will make the pattern for which we will comment on this section.
There is another issue that comes to light in this prayer which was previously alluded to in verse 6. Paul’s second eschatological reference (vs 10) in this thanksgiving passage shows most assuredly his view of the trajectory of time. For Paul history is going somewhere. It is pressing ever more forward toward the ...

I am Second Proper Self Service

Can You Properly Serve Yourself?
*As Christians we somehow get the idea that we are to take no regard for ourselves. This notion usually applies to those who regard themselves as more advanced in their faith. They believe they have come to the superior rank where service to self is seen as a selfish act that is offensive to God. Be clear! This is false piety. Without proper service to our self we will spiritually and physically deteriorate. The Sabbath of God will me missing from our lives and the fruit of the Spirit will be choked out by worry and anxiety.

Prayer as proper service to self James 5:13

-selfish prayers
*The word selfish is defined as “devoted to or caring only for one’s self; concerned primarily with one’s own interest.” On the surface there doesn’t seem to be much wrong with ...

Philippians
Chapter 1:7-8

Previously we discussed how Paul closely follows the cultural patterns of letter writing during his time. Verses 7-8, are no exception to that rule. It is common for the writer of an epistle to mention their longing for their friends. What is the exception to the rule for Paul is how he never allows himself to be cliché when he is writing. After only eight verses in to his letter we see how Paul maximizes his words every chance that he gets.
In verses 3-6, Paul alludes to memories of his time with the Philippians and how those memories cause him to pray for them. While much time has passed and much distance separates them Paul uses verses 7 and 8 to tell them how he presently feels about them and that he still longs for them. To our earlier point, there is an unusual strength to his statements ...

Philippians 1:7-8*
Picture, if you will, sitting in the meeting place in the city of Philippi listening to the reading of this letter from Paul. You look to your right and there is Lydia, the first convert in the city, listening with a happy heart knowing that she is remembering the day that Paul showed up (Acts 16:13-15). Then you look to your left and you see the jailer, the same one who heard the songs of Paul and Silas, who felt the earth quake and feared as the prison doors swung open, sitting with his whole family wondering how Paul could seem so joyful despite being locked up (Acts 16:25-40, Phil. 1:12). You would be sitting among people who had been through the good and the bad with Paul and know that they stuck with him whether he was present or not. Paul confirms this in his letter when he ...

I am Second Proper Relationship Service

The Economy of Relationships in the Kingdom of God
*An interesting phenomenon has taken place over the course of human history; the more civilization has moved toward individualism as the highest value of human relationships the more we see just how wired for relationships we actually are. Ironically, it has progressed to the point where we are inventing ways to maintain virtual relationships with real people in order to satisfy our need for relationships without having to forsake our individualism as the highest value of relationships. Through modern devices, whatever they may be, we have only learned how to manage relationships not how to actually BE IN relationships. What we don’t realize is just how far such practices are pushing away from the Kingdom of God.

We Are Almost There Mark 12:28-34

-“not far from the Kingdom of God.” Vs 34
*It is ...

Philippians
Chapter 1:3-6

To express one’s thanksgiving was a common practice in ancient letters. Paul seemed to use common practices in extraordinary ways. Much like his salutation and greeting, we see how Paul is never generic with his expression of gratitude neither is he cliché or rhetorical. Paul is never wasteful of words or opportunities and in this letter to the Philippians he uses the standard thanksgiving passage to his advantage and the listeners’ benefit.
In considering this thanksgiving passage we need to see verses 3 through 11 as one complete unit. Since this was a letter meant for the ears of hearers and not the eyes of readers Paul structures each section of his letter for maximum retention. Thus, the content and flow of the passage can be discussed together or separately:
“The thanksgiving here has a threefold structure which may be viewed in either of two ways: In content, there is ...
